This is very hard to write, but I'm out of options at this point and don't know where else to turn. I'll try to just state the facts of our case and not become emotional. Please bear with me.
I'm 56, my husband is 74, and we're both citizens of the U.S. of A.. We both worked hard and paid taxes up until recently. That's when we lost our home and our business in the Delta in the 1998 floods. We had some meager savings which my stepson took to pay for his divorce, leaving us completely broke. Since then we've been struggling to survive on my husband's Social Security, but we're failing miserably.
Currently we have no heat because we can't afford $1250.00 or more to fill the propane tank. We can't afford decent groceries, so we're both suffering from malnutrition.
My husband now has Alzheimer's Disease and I'm his sole caregiver. Phone messages and emails to local agencies which are supposed to help people in this situation have gone unanswered.
Additionally, I desperately need medical treatment for a heart condition as well as dental care to repair several broken (and very painful) teeth. The local hospital refused to treat me during a heart attack because I couldn't give them a $300 down payment. (This is supposed to be illegal, but apparently it's now condoned where we live.) None of the local doctors or dentists will even make an appointment to see me because I have no insurance.
We'd truly appreciate any help that you can give us.
